This August was a remarkable month for me as a composer. My piece, Ocean Storm, found itself resonating through the halls of the National Flute Association Convention in San Antonio, Texas. This event brought together some of the most talented flutists and musicians from across the United States , and having my work featured in this setting was truly a milestone in my career.
Two Performances, One Unforgettable Experience
The first performance of Ocean Storm took place on August 1st, and it was the Virginia Commonwealth University Flute Ensemble that had the honor of debuting the piece at the convention. The ensemble, under the direction of my esteemed colleague, Dr. Tabatha Easley, delivered a powerful rendition of the piece that captured the essence of the stormy, tumultuous nature of the composition. Their performance was met with enthusiasm and praise from the audience, marking a significant moment not just for me, but for the ensemble as well. Tabatha Easley later shared:
The VCU Flute Ensemble played Ocean Storm and it was very well received!
Following this success, Ocean Storm was again brought to life on August 4th, this time by the National Collegiate Flute Choir. The choir, known for its exceptional skill and musicality, took to the stage and delivered a performance that truly embodied the intensity and power of the ocean’s fury as envisioned in the piece. The acoustics of the venue and the choir’s dynamic interpretation brought out the best in the composition, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
The Inspiration Behind Ocean Storm
Ocean Storm was inspired by the raw, untamed forces of nature, particularly the ocean’s ability to both create and destroy. I wanted to explore the contrasting elements of tranquility and chaos, serenity and violence, all within a single piece. The composition begins with a few light notes that mimic the onset of a gentle rain, gradually building into a driving rhythmic pattern that evokes the intensity of a heavy storm. To create a threatening atmosphere and unique textures, I employed dissonant harmonies and special techniques such as key slaps and beatboxing sounds. These elements combined to evoke the sensation of being in the midst of a storm, surrounded by the relentless power of the ocean.
The flutes, with their ability to produce both delicate and piercing sounds, were the perfect instruments to convey these contrasts. The performances at the convention did justice to this vision, with the musicians skillfully navigating the piece’s intricate dynamics and dramatic crescendos.

Looking Ahead
The performances at the National Flute Association Convention have opened up new opportunities and inspired me to continue pushing the boundaries of my work. I am incredibly grateful to both the VCU Flute Ensemble and the National Collegiate Flute Choir for their dedication and artistry in bringing Ocean Storm to life. Their performances were not just a showcase of their talent but a testament to the power of collaboration between composer and musicians.
As I look forward to future projects and performances, the experience at the National Flute Association Convention will undoubtedly remain a highlight in my career. It serves as a reminder of the impact that music can have, not just on those who perform it, but on everyone who experiences it.
