Award-winning, innovative, highly technical professional with 10+ years of music creation experience, Filipe Leitao (b. 1984) is a Brazilian-born composer, music producer, and orchestrator based in Tuscaloosa, AL. He was born and raised in Belém, a metropolis rich in culture and natural beauty, situated at the gateway to the Amazon river in northern Brazil. Since Filipe was 10 years old, when he began his musical studies, he knew he could make a difference, using music as a powerful and passionate tool.
During his career, beyond teaching keyboard and music production at the Federal University of Para, Brazil, Filipe has produced indie albums of varied styles, arranged and orchestrated works, as well as scored visual media projects, and composed art pieces for varied ensembles. Filipe’s works reflect his unique voice originated from a mix of classical music, popular music, Brazilian music, and film music. His music has been used in a variety of films, video games, and animation pieces, and has also been recognized at both national and international levels, and obtained prizes and performances on renowned film and music festivals.
Filipe received the Master of Fine Arts degree in Music Production and Sound Design for Visual Media at the Academy of Art (San Francisco, CA). Currently, Filipe is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Music Composition at The University of Alabama; he studies composition with Dr. Amir Zaheri and has studied with Dr. C. P. First. As a Composition & Theory Graduate Teaching Assistant at The University of Alabama, Filipe has been teaching applied composition lessons, orchestration, music production and sound design, and theory/musicianship labs for varied levels. Additionally, he is the Associate Director and Composer-in-Residence for The University of Alabama Contemporary Music Ensemble.
